What a splendid piece of kit this is! I always dreamed of having a tipi style tent and now thanks to River Country Products that dream has come true. First off I’d like to address any concerns about seams not being sealed as I have seen some reviews falsely asserting such a thing, all seams are indeed seam taped on the interior of the tent, even in the corners where it appears some light shines through pin holes is all taped, those taped seams are enough to keep any water out, however it is worth taking the time to seam seal/tape the exterior seams to prolong the life of those precious threads that hold it all together, a single 2 ounce bottle of your choice seam sealant should be more than enough to cover every seam (including the zipper seam). Moving on to how water resistant it is, out of the box it was plenty water resistant but given that I am in Florida and intend to hike the Florida Trail during the rainy months (yes I know, everyone else thinks I’m crazy too) I really want to ensure it’s as watertight as possible. I sprayed some run of the mill tent waterproofing spray all over every inch of this tent and now it whicks water like a ducks feather! Now let’s talk about condensation, every hikers favorite step of the water cycle, it’s mostly a single wall tent so you’re gonna get condensation in the right conditions no matter what, that being said there are some handy tips listed on the pamphlet provided with the tent. Personally, in the few nights I’ve slept in it so far I didnt experience any condensation, each night was considerably more windy than the last so I reckon that played a strong role in keeping the condensation at bay, even when it rained. That brings me to my next point, wind resistance and ventilation. Given the shape of this tent, when tacked down to the ground with care I would trust it on any wind whipped day or night, the wind just goes right up and over. The ventilation is much nicer than any tent I’ve previously owned, there are screens on the front and back so if you set up perpendicular to any crosswind it’ll pass right through and act as a nice reprieve from stagnant stinky hiker aroma. Now let’s talk set up and features, it is crucial that you set this up on flat ground, if theres a dip or valley that causes each end to rise you’ll know it, the tent just wont look right. Set up could take a couple tries to get right so take your time and make note of the landscape. Personally I found the most success when staking out the outer guy lines first rather than the footprint, I like setting it up with an extended guy line tied to the top loop (the loop intended for stringing up the tent over a tree branch) and stretched far from the tent, then wrapped around my second trekking pole, then staked to the ground. Doing this means you can roll up both vestibules rather than use one for keeping the tent up, it also means you could perhaps extend your trekking pole a bit higher at the peak of the tent and use guy lines for the footprint as well so the corners arent flat against the ground. To each their own, experiment and find what works best for you! The vestibules are nice, I’ve never had a tent with any before so its killer to have that option, feels a bit more secure that way, layin down a ground sheet to act as a moisture barrier when the vestibules are staked out is a good call as well. It’s got plenty of room inside for one person, I’m 6’0 and when all lines are staked and tensioned well theres a good bit of room between me and the walls. All things considered I’m very happy with this setup and I’m going to entrust it to keep me comfortable enough during my hike of the Florida Trail, if theres anything worth noting about the shelter after I’ve watched many many moons pass by within it, in all sorts of environments, I’ll update this review. Till then, consider giving this lightweight, affordable, and downright neat tent a shot. Happy camping!
